From the Publisher: Public Service Recognition Week May 3-9, 2020

36 years of honoring public servants and connecting citizens with their government

Public Service Recognition Week is celebrated the first week of May since 1985 (beginning on the first Sunday of the month) to honor the men and women who serve our nation as federal, state, county and local government employees.

Wisely, this year’s event is postponed due to COVID-19. However, if you go online a virtual celebration will be shared at from federal, state, county and local governments.

This time of the year we have always celebrated the event starting with Sylvester Park in downtown Olympia, then Capitol Lake, and finally to the East Capitol Campus. These locations were all with the help of the General Administration, now known as the Department of Enterprise Services.

In addition to Olympia, PSRW was a big event in Yakima, Tri-Cities, Vancouver, Spokane and downtown Seattle.

Much of these events were sponsored by SOS, WSECU, WSDOT, WSP, and DSHS.

Lately, the event in Olympia has been co-sponsored by OFM and the Federation of State Employees.

A person mentioned that they were hoping for the traditional music, agency and non-profit booths, with the free hot dogs on a bun, potato chips, water, apples and lattes, plus loads of giveaways like candy and such.

Personally, my wish was for the variety of homemade masks as employees seek out current and previous co-workers. The sharing by attendees has always been interesting at crowds estimated in Olympia at over 3,000,

Many of the traditional employee awards will be postponed this year, but our patient, humble and orderly state employees need to set the tone in the ability to adapt to change until the “all clear” is given to protect the stakeholders and families.

Recognition can happen anytime. Even better when the weather is pleasant, sunny, with a little breeze. Suggestion for now is the thank each other when you’re back together, elbow to elbow!

The FTE News would like to salute you for all that you do from home and the essential workplace.

Well done good and faithful public servants.
