It’s commitment to sustainability has garnered the Department of Social and Health Services Central Purchasing Unit the Leadership in Greener Purchasing award from Office Depot.

It was one of 21 awards the office supply firm presented for calendar year 2018. DSHS won the award in the state government sector. It spent $1,022,728 on green products (55 percent of its purchasing!).

Here’s what DSHS was able to save or avoid by purchasing so much “green” or 100 percent recycled paper:

9,872 trees

283,686 pounds of waste

4,072 mil BTUs

781,372 lbs of carbon

4,237,833 gallons of water

Our next steps are to focus on alternatives for purchasing single use plastics, and to keep increasing our green spending and tracking our progress.
