Community Youth Services – CFD # 0319570. Celebrating 50 YEARS of service

Every night, dozens of young people in the South Sound need a safe place to sleep. It’s not easy, given that there are few shelter beds devoted to those who are under age 24. Adult homeless shelters leave youth/young adults feeling more vulnerable and desperate than they are already. Thankfully, more options are becoming available to end youth homelessness through the work of local non-profit, Community Youth Services.

Adolescents become homeless for several reasons: abuse, neglect and trauma. They may live in an unstable home where they are abused sexually, physically, and mentally or their family suffers financially. Forty percent of the homeless are LBGTQ. Often, an adolescent experiences many difficult situations at home; and their only solution is to escape and live on the street.

Non-profit organizations, such as Community Youth Services, are working toward decreasing the number of homeless youth on the streets. Since 2014, CYS has operated the only youth overnight shelters between Seattle and Portland, along the busy I-5 corridor, in Olympia and Tacoma.

Once the young people find safety and stability with shelter, CYS helps them become contributing members of society. That is possible through the 24 integrated programs that help meet the needs of the youth people, such as mental health, family services, housing and education/employment.
