CFD: Washington State Coalition Against Domestic Violence (WSCADV)

Domestic violence is 100% preventable. However, the reality today is one out of every three women in the U.S. will experience physical/sexual abuse, and/or stalking by an intimate partner in their lifetime. Domestic violence (DV) is one of the leading causes of homelessness for women and children. The movement to end DV faces a critical question: Do the solutions developed almost 40 years ago still meet the needs of survivors and their children today? The DV field needs to evolve with the dramatic changes over the past four decades in women’s legal and economic status, science, and technology.

Through creative, innovative approaches Washington State Coalition Against Domestic Violence (WSCADV) has created safe, effective, and promising solutions. Two of these are Domestic Violence Housing First (DVHF) and the Refuse To Abuse® campaign.

Through DVHF, WSCADV advances an innovative approach to ending homelessness and trauma. DVHF creates pathways to permanent, safe, and stable housing, and provides a flexible approach to victim advocacy. This in turn gives survivors the freedom to choose how to rebuild their lives and secure a safe future for their children and themselves. DVHF focuses on getting survivors and their children into stable housing as quickly as possible, or helping them keep the home they already have, and then providing the necessary support as they rebuild their lives. WSCADV piloted DVHF with 13 DV Agencies from rural, urban, and Tribal regions across Washington State, and looks to expand its program and research to 8 more DV Agencies.

The Refuse To Abuse® campaign is one example of how WSCADV promotes a just society. Building on the “refuse to lose” mantra of a winning baseball season, Refuse To Abuse® is a two-decade partnership between WSCADV and the Seattle Mariners that educates the public with positive messages about respect (http://wscadv.org/projects/refuse-to-abuse/). The annual Refuse To Abuse® 5K is a unique fun run/walk where participants experience every level of Safeco Field; from the top level, to the players’ tunnel, to an awe-inspiring lap around the MBL field. WSCADV continues to influence the MLB to stand in greater integrity and responsibility for DV with its players, employees, and their families.

WSCADV plays a unique, effective role in building momentum, and creating and leading changes within the DV field to benefit survivors of DV and their children. With your support, WSCADV will continue improving how communities respond to DV and create a social intolerance for abuse.
