CFD: Thurston County Food Bank

The Thurston County Food Bank is expanding to meet local community needs. Recent acquisition of a 1.4 acre piece of property in Lacey with great development potential will support our work to “eliminate hunger in our community.”  Our plan has been embraced by the City of Lacey, Lacey South Sound Chamber and the North Thurston School District. It now carries the designation of being Lacey’s first “Compassion Community Project” and we are excited.

The property will house a seasonal Farm Stand supported by local farmers, community gardens and our grocery rescue program. In partnership with Garden Raised Bounty (GRuB) the site will be home to their Victory Garden managed by local veterans. And the last part of the plan is the addition, Lacey’s Food Bank. Our goal is to replicate the programs and services available at our Olympia Food Bank.

This new Food Bank would operate on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday to compliment the Monday, Wednesday and Friday schedule of the Olympia location. Services would be designated to focus on fresh nutrient dense foods, frozen meat, dairy and produce. Non-perishables will be provided using the shopping or choice model where a client chooses the food they take home. This practice increases the dignity of those using our service, allows a client to choose the food most appropriate to meet their dietary needs, and cultural preferences. Special populations such as older Americans or those with disabilities, families with young children, veterans and active duty personnel will be served with special hours or days of service, enabling more targeted services and coordination with key stakeholders. Wrap-around services such as application assistance, information and referrals, and nutrition education will be offered on site and targeted to meet specific needs.

We embrace the work ahead bolstered by growing community support in Lacey and throughout Thurston County.

Thank you for your support through the Combined Fund Drive, financially and through volunteering. It’s much appreciated by our clients and supporters.
