CFD: Providing One-to-One Mentoring at No Cost to the Children or Their Families

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Washington is the only local non-profit providing volunteer based one-to-one mentoring relationships for children facing adversity at no cost. We have been serving Thurston, Mason, Lewis, Pacific, and Grays Harbor counties for over thirty years. Last year, we served over 1,500 children and family members through over 25,000 mentoring hours in 33 different cities and sites.

Our staff recruits, screens, and vets our volunteer mentors. We match children and mentors based on a child centered model, taking into consideration personality, shared interests and backgrounds, as well as location. As a result, the friendships started in our program can last decades, and often do. Once the match is made, we check-in with the child, parent/guardian, and mentor on a regular basis. We are able to offer our matches many enriching activities such as parties and sports events thanks to the generosity of our donors.

One-to-one mentoring has a hugely positive impact on children and the community.  After one year in our program: 94% of Littles say they are confident they will finish high school, 69% feel socially accepted by their peers, and 99% avoided risky behaviors such as drug or alcohol use. At risk youth with a mentor are 130% more likely than their peers to hold a leadership position as adult. Additionally, our mentoring programs’ benefit to the state is valued at $7.25 million, based on the Washington State Institute for Public Policy’s calculated benefits per child for school and community based mentoring.

We screen, match and support our mentors and mentees at absolutely no cost to the children, their families, or the mentors. As a result we rely heavily upon donations we receive from the community. As you consider the many local charities to donate your dollars to, we hope you keep Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Washington in mind.
