CFD: Monarch Children’s JAC

When a child and their family enter the Monarch Children’s Justice & Advocacy Center, they come upon a tree with many leaves attached to the wall. Each child is invited to decorate a leaf and place it on the tree, surrounded by others who have traveled this same path before. Immediately the child is given reassurance of safety, comfort, and assurance of not being alone. This is the tree of hope, of healing and new growth.

Monarch is a program of Community Action Council of Lewis, Mason and Thurston Counties and is a resource for sexually abused children, adult survivors and their families/partners in Thurston County. Monarch’s mission is to reduce the incident and impact of child abuse in our community. Monarch is an accredited center and replicates the nationally recognized Children’s Advocacy Center model, which uses a multidisciplinary victim-centered approach to the prevention, investigations, prosecution, and treatment of sexual abuse. Direct services include forensic interviews, medical evaluations, advocacy, and therapy. Additionally, Monarch coordinates a multidisciplinary team consisting of law enforcement, prosecutors, DSHS, health care providers, therapists and advocates. This team coordinates investigations, staffs complex cases, and tracks cases as they move through the system. Monarch also conducts community training and outreach designed to raise awareness of, and prevention of, child sexual abuse.

Each year, Monarch serves over 600 clients in our community from our current location at 420 Golf Club Road in Lacey, WA. The program has expanded tremendously over the years to better serve victims and has now outgrown the space. Offices and exam rooms are overcrowded, storage is limited and new development in the area poses traffic congestion and safety issues for the clients served.

In April 2017, Monarch submitted its first grant request for funds and also held its first capital campaign fundraiser to raise funding and awareness for the new building expansion project. Monarch’s new home will sit adjacent to the Community Action Council at 3020 Willamette Drive NE in Lacey. The Council’s location, current building amenities, infrastructure and land contribution allows Monarch’s expansion project costs to be solely the construction of the new facility.

The new building will have a child oriented lobby and waiting area with specified rooms by services provided. It will increase their space by over 3,000 square feet., for a total of 7,450 square feet that will feature an outdoor space for use of children, their families, staff and of course, a place for our therapy dog to enjoy as well!!

You can be a beacon of HOPE for a child to create a new space where trauma stops and healing begins by supporting Monarch’s building expansion project. It is our hope to continue to build upon our efforts to meet the high need and demand for the services Monarch provides to our community.
