CFD: Children’s Advocacy Centers of Washington

Last year over 6,300 children were seen by Child Advocacy Centers in Washington State; 84% of those children were impacted by sexual or physical abuse and 68% of those children were under the age of twelve.

Child Advocacy Centers (CAC’s) are healing places to reduce the trauma for young victims of violence and sexual abuse. CAC’s offer a one-stop caring, protective environment where children feel safe to tell their stories – just once- to physicians, police, counselors, and expert professionals who care, who can help stop their abuse, and begin their process of healing and bring justice. CAC’s bring this multidisciplinary team together to create a child-focused approach to child abuse cases. Guiding a family from crisis to hope, and help them navigate the complex criminal justice and child welfare system is an important outcome that CAC’s provide.

The Children’s Advocacy Centers of Washington is the state-wide organization that supports Child Advocacy Centers through funding, training and technical assistance, and development of new CAC’s. We, and local CAC’s, are accredited through the National Children’s Alliance to assure the highest standard of care is provided to victims.  There are currently 16 accredited CAC’s and 5 developing CAC’s in our state providing serves in 32 counties. The 5 communities developing a CAC must meet national accreditation standards before state and federal funding is fully available. State employee donations will be used to support these five centers so they will become a fully accredited center and be able to provide the one-stop caring place for children who are victims of sexual assault.
