April 6, Mon. @ Noon: The State Capital Museum and historian Drew Crooks, Expert Local Historian, present Metamorphosis: The Transformation of Olympia from Frontier Village to Modern Town, 1889-1912. The turn of the twentieth century was a time of dramatic change for the capital of Washington State. Presenter Drew Crooks will use artistic illustrations, historical photographs, and newspaper accounts to explain this transformation. He will also examine the significant impact of these changes onOlympia’s development and character, a mixed legacy that extends to the present day. April 19, Sun., 2:30 pm: Seattle Women's Chorus will make its Olympia debut with a free program of music by and about famous women of Broadway, at 3 pm at St. John's Episcopal Church. "Lullaby of Broadway" celebrates such notables as Gypsy Rose Lee, Aunti Mame, Annie Oakley and many others. Now in its sixth season, SWC is directed by Dennis Coleman, who also is artistic director of the Seattle Men's Chorus. Admission is free. An offering will be received at intermission. April 26, Sun., 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.: Saint Martin’s University will host the fourth annual Dragon Boat Festival at Heritage Park on Capitol Lake in downtown Olympia. The festival, presented by Saint Martin’s in cooperation with the Washington Dragon Boat Association, will feature 24 teams and is expected to draw 4,500 spectators from throughout the Pacific Northwest. The event is free and open to the public. This year’s Dragon Boat lineup features paddling talent from several colleges, universities, government agencies, and community organizations. Also participating in the event are many local and regional teams including the award-winning dragon boat team Blind Ambition from Hillsboro, Oregon whose members are blind and or visually impaired.
